Northern Exposure – Why NI Producers Panel

Northern Ireland has become an attractive place for Feature Film Producers and not just those based here. 20 Features have been made here in the last 7 years and prior to that, well, nothing really. Why is that? How long can it last? Is it the climate, the range of locations, the infrastructure, the talent, the revival in Short Film culture, the Good Friday Agreement, Low Cost Airlines, the money available? Is it a coincidence that the upsurge in production came at a time when the Film Industry in Ireland was at a peak or was it because the Northern Ireland Film Commission was established 1997? Was it the emergence of National Lottery funding?

The panel includes producer Alan Moloney (Intermission, Breakfast on Pluto), with the Director’s viewpoint articulated by Aisling Walsh (Song For A Raggy Boy, Sinners) and Kirsten Sheridan (Disco Pigs, In America -Co-Writer). Members of the panel who have worked here will identify their reasons for doing so, what happened when they came and whether they'll come back. And those who have yet to work in the North will help to examine the key factors that encourage film makers to consider any territory.
