MAYSLES BROTHERS DOCUMENTARY PRIZE ANNOUNCED

Nomadak TX was named as the recipient of the 2nd Maysles Brothers Award for Best Documentary. The announcement was made during the closing ceremony of the Belfast Film Festival last night.

Directed by Raul de la Fuente, Nomadak TX is a visually and aurally luscious film about the traditional Basque musical instrument - the Txalaparta.

The Jury for the 2nd Maysles Brothers Competition was:

Mark Cousins – author of Imagining Reality, former Artistic Director of the Edinburgh International Film Festival, filmmaker and producer

Margo Harkin – filmmaker and producer with Besome Productions

Mick Hannigan – director of the Cork Film Festival

They said:

The overall standard of the competition was high and we were reminded of the power of the medium of documentary to transport us to the heart of other people’s cultures and experiences. We were particularly pleased to see a selection of documentary short films.

There were two films that particularly impressed us. We’d like to give honourable mention to John & Jane by Ashim Ahluwalia for its devastating insight into the impact of globalisation as shown in Mumbai’s call centres.

We’d like to present the 2nd Maysles Brothers Award to Nomadak TX by Raul de la Fuente, a visual and aural feast that demonstrated a delicate political sensibility through the celebration of people’s ethnicity and culture, in the most joyful way.
