Mise Éire marks the start of the historical documentary in Ireland.
One of the first full-length films to use actuality and newsreel film. Mise Éire is also noteworthy for being the first full-length Irish language film ever made. Produced by Gael Linn in 1959, Mise Éire went on general release to great national acclaim in early 1960. The film’s music soundtrack by Seán Ó Riada has become one of the nation’s defining pieces of music.
Throughout the film, notable historical personalities can be seen including Michael Collins and Éamon de Valera addressing supporters in the 1917-1918 period; Countess Markievicz; Thomas Clarke; Éamonn Ceannt and James Connolly.
