One of the highlights of this years festival programme is Marc Isaacs’ feature length version All White in Barking. The film’s director, a teacher at the National Film and Television School, is an ideal industry practitioner when it comes to giving any budding filmmakers an adrenaline shot of enthusiasm. His recent films are regarded as some of the best documentaries on British TV: Philip and his Seven Wives, Someday My Prince will Come and Calais: The Last Border are just a few of them. What’s most interesting is Marc’s style of work, it utilises much of the traditional form of observational filmmaking while very directly innovating within that form, mainly by recognising the filmmaker’s presence. His work is exciting and popularly engaging while never proving exploitative. Innovation is often proved by controversy and his approach to film form is often deemed so by some film purists who debate about any filmmaker’s tendency to engage with a film’s subject. Meanwhile, Marc often attempts to directly challenge his subject’s point of view.
This workshop will break down the making of the film and provide opportunities to discuss documentary film form and the realities of reality on film!
