Ronan Bennett was brought up in Belfast. He is the author of five novels, including the hugely acclaimed The Catastrophist (shortlisted for the Whitbread Novel Award) and Havoc, in Its Third Year (winner of the Irish Novel of the Year and longlisted for the Booker Prize and shortlisted for the IMPAC award).
He has also written screenplays for film and television including Public Enemies, which is currently being filmed by director Michael Mann, starring Johnny Depp, Christian Bale and Marion Coutillard. He also wrote Face, starring Robert Carlyle and Ray Winstone, Love Lies Bleeding, starring Mark Rylance, and Rebel Heart.
Other credits include Lucky Break, a prison escape comedy released in 2001, the controversial BBC eco-thriller, Fields of Gold, and The Hamburg Cell, about the men who planned and carried out the 9/11 attacks. His series of short films, 10 Days to War, starring Kenneth Branagh, Stephen Rea, Juliet Stephenson and Tom Conti, will air on BBC2 on 10-19 March.
For the Belfast film Festival Ronan Bennett will give a special master class on screenwriting for film and television.
