The 9th Jameson Belfast Film Festival opened on Thursday 26th March with the UK and Ireland Premiere of Little Ashes, a film set in 1920s Madrid, which chronicles the relationship between a young Salvador Dali and Federico Garcia Lorca. Stars of the film Javier Beltran (Lorca), Marina Gatell and Director Paul Morrison graced the red carpet of Belfast’s Movie House Cinema, marking the start of ten days of cinematic celebration in the city.
Director of Little Ashes Paul Morrison commented at the Premiere: “I'm very proud that Little Ashes was selected to open the 9th Jameson Belfast Film Festival. We had a great international creative team, very committed to this story. We felt we were doing something special and I believe that our creative excitement will make the audience of Belfast as thrilled and moved in the viewing, as we were in the making.”
Film fans will be treated to over 130 film screenings from over 30 countries as well as an eclectic mix of films and special events as part of the 9th Jameson Belfast Film Festival, as Michele Devlin, Festival Director, explains: “We are delighted to have opened the 9th Jameson Belfast Film Festival with Paul Morrison’s wonderful film Little Ashes.
We have a fantastic line up of events this year. We’re excited about having introduced a brand new strand, Jameson Sound and Vision, to celebrate the role that music plays in film. Highlights include local musicians bringing the soundtrack of ‘O, Brother, Where Art Thou? to life at Spring and Airbrake, Sunday 29th March, and a unique screening of The Hunchback of Notre Dame to a live score in the stunning St. Anne’s Cathedral, Friday 27th March, to name but a few.
Special guests are arriving in the city for the Festival including celebrated Indian film maker Adoor Gopalakrishnan (The Walls, Shadow Kill – screening on Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th March) and comedian Paul Merton who brings his tour Silent Clowns to Movie House Yorkgate (Friday 3rd April). We also have the eagerly awaited premieres of locally made features Cherrybomb and Ditching.
We’re looking forward to bringing a celebration of local and international cinema to the audiences of Belfast.”
