MACGILL - TACHRÁN GAN TODHCHAÍ
TUESDAY 31 MARCH 7.30PM
AN CULTURLANN

£4.50 / £4 BOOK ONLINE
Starring Stephen Rea as MacGill, this creative documentary examines the life of Patrick MacGill (1891 – 1963) navvy poet, novelist, dramatist and screen writer whose books Children of the Dead End (1913) and The Rat Pit (1914) provide a vivid account of life for the itinerant Irish labourer in the first decades
of the last century.

MacGill witnessed some of the great events of the twentieth century – the rise of the Labour Movement, the Great War, the Great Depression. His experience mirrored that of many Irish people during this period – grinding rural poverty, migratory labour, a shift to the English language, national and social awakening, and the ever present reality of emigration.

Screening Irish with English subtitles.

The Director will attend the screening.

Ireland / 2009 / 73mins / Director: Desmond Bell
