Richard Jobson attended the Belfast Film Festival in 2007 with A Woman In Winter and, his latest film, New Town Killers, is no less imaginative, using Edinburgh as a back drop.
Two private bankers, Alistair (Dougray Scott) and Jamie (Alastair Mackenzie) who have the world at their feet, get their kicks from playing a 12-hour game of ‘hunt, hide and seek’ with people from the margins of society who find themselves in financial troubles.
Their next quarry is Sean Kelly, a parentless teenager who lives with his sister, Alice on a housing estate on the outskirts of Edinburgh. She’s in debt and he’s going nowhere fast.
Sean agrees to play the game for cash owed by his sister. He soon realises he’s into12 hours of hell, where the wrong place or wrong friendship can get him into a lot of trouble and survival is the name of the game.
Jobson uses the inherent thrill of the hunt to pursue his concerns about the vast gulf between the ‘haves’ and ‘have-nots’ and is clearly wearing political concerns on his sleeve in his latest film.
New Town Killers is an ambitious and kinetic thriller, a tension-packed joyride through Edinburgh streets.
