"He just collapsed, with a crate in his hands.” Mme. Sforza’s face is taut, her hands slowly moving as she recalls the moment of her husband’s heart attack.
Her 30-year-old son Antoine also looks stricken, not quite sure what to make of this new situation. He’s just arrived from the city, summoned by his family after 10 years away.
To help the family out, he drives their grocery van around the region to visit the mainly elderly, if sometimes eccentric, population who rely on the deliveries for their shopping.
His initial rudeness and resentment towards his customers soon fades away as he begins to form friendships and confronts the issues he has with his own family.
The characters around the village and the glorious, understated countryside, all form a backdrop to the film's unassuming yet haunting story. But the film's air of absolute veracity is in great part due to the mostly ‘walk on’ parts by the locals, elderly men and women who bring a rich texture of humanity to the film's mood.
