Rarely is a lifetime so adroitly expressed in 80mins of film.
Rene is followed by renowned filmmaker Helena Trestikova for over twenty years against the background of a new Europe and a new Czech Republic.
This ultimate outsider film has you hooked from the beginning when Rene, as a teenager twenty years ago, is arrested for a petty crime offense. Subsequently he spends the next decades in and out of prison, becomes a published author and a documentary film star.
The relationship between filmmaker and subject is grippingly told throughout, even as Rene, on brief release, is arrested once again for robbing the filmmaker's flat!
This excellent film expresses some of the great achievements possible in long-term coverage of a film subject. Rene is an introspective philosopher of life who presents a life story of crime and punishment with eloquence and powerful creativity.
Prix ARTE, Best Documentary Film, European Film Academy
Golden Dove, Best Documentary Feature Film, DokLeipzig
"This engrossing film takes us on a journey of a life lived outside of society. As his rap sheet lengthens, his body tattoos multiply, a visual testimony to the anger fueling his blighted life. His letters to Trestikova and access to the many cells which he calls home enhance this must-see film." - Sheffield DocFest
