Today, over 200,000 people are being held in concentration camps in North Korea, but how do you tell the story of a place no outsider has ever been?

The filmmaker, Andrzej Fidyk, sets out to find a North Korean exile who was not only a former director of the Mass Games but also a surviving escapee from Yodok camp.

A difficult achievement in itself, he then gathers eight other surviving escapees, follows the making of a musical telling their stories and, in the process, allows us access to one of the most secretive and astonishing accounts of human rights abuse yet to be revealed.

Yodok Stories is a phenomenal film, offering grandiose musical spectacle mixed with intimate, harrowing reflection. A stunning must-see.

Offical Selection, Joris Ivens Competition, IDFA

“I cannot recommend this film enough to any and everyone. People need to know, and they need to see "Yodok Stories." – Film Threat Magazine

“Fidyk's film … imaginatively peers deep inside North Korean communism to reveal a social system based on a brand of insanity that will make even hardcore anti-commies blanch … [a] startling consideration
of inhumanity.”
