In a special tribute to the life and work of the late great David Hammond, Jameson Belfast Film Festival presents an evening of film and music.
Described by Jeremy Isaacs as a ‘Poet of Film’, David Hammond was also a successful writer, singer, teacher, songwriter, historian, musician and broadcaster.
David was known worldwide for his unique documentaries on subjects including Seamus Heaney and the Beirut hostage, Brian Keenan.
As an accomplished musician, his many collaborators ranged from Clancy Brothers and Donal Lunny to US folk figures such as Alan Lomax and Pete Seeger.
Firstly, we have a screening of David’s classic documentary The Magic Fiddle, filmed in the Louisiana swamplands, the Appalachian Mountains, the Donegal coast and the Shetland Islands. In the film, some of the greatest violinists in the world from Yehudi Menuhin to Aly Bain to Stephane Grappelli share their art with David. The film is introduced by musician, composer and long time collaborator at Flying Fox Films, Neil Martin.
The screening is followed by a special performance from Arty McGlynn and Nollaig Casey. Arty McGlynn is without doubt the finest and most sought after guitar player in Ireland with a unique understanding of music he performs. Nollaig Casey is one of Ireland's most gifted musicians, with an international reputation as an exponent of Irish traditional music on the fiddle.
