The Jammed is a powerful, beautifully shot film about sex trafficking in Australia. It became a project of award winning writer/director Dee McLachlan after she saw a buried news item about trafficked prostitutes. Deported after detention as illegal immigrants, their trafficker received a suspended sentence.

Armed with the same unflinching gaze Lukas Moodysson’s Lilya 4-Ever trained on the sordid world of sexual slavery, Austrailian thriller The Jammed is an honorable addition to the small number of films tackling the topic seriously.

An unobtrusive musical score by Grant McLachlan adds to poignant moods and fast pace. Peter Falk’s impressive cinematography makes the most of unusual angles and striking contrasts of light, form and colour. Outstanding performances by the three trafficked girls, Veronica Sywak as their rescuer and Amanda Ma as the distraught, persistent mother create a potently affecting film.

Amnesty International is hosting panel discussions after this event.

The Jammed panel will include:
Anna Lo (MLA) South Belfast Alliance Party spokesperson on trafficking. Tomoya Obokata (Assistant Director of the Human Rights Centre at Queens). His research focus has been on trafficking and he currently serves as a Specialist Advisor to the Joint Committee on Human Rights of the Westminister Parliament.
The panel will be chaired by Patricia Campbell (Amnesty International, a leading campaigner on violence against women).
