A chronological account of influential and legendry late 70’s band - Joy Division.

Joy Division did not last long. They played their first gig on May 29, 1977 under the moniker “Warsaw.” It was all over less than three years later when lead singer Ian Curtis committed suicide on May 18, 1980, on the eve of the band’s first tour of the United States. When Curtis died, the group was still a cult phenomenon, but its legend and its influence only grew over the years.

Grant Gee who previously made the Radiohead documentary, Meeting the People is Easy, pays homage to the band. It is a must-see for anyone who loves the band or the group that formed from its ashes, New Order, but it is also compelling enough to hold the attention of even those with only a vague curiosity about the subject. Gee wisely makes liberal use of Joy Division’s music. This is no dry document, but a film that manages to freeze a moment in time. It has been 30 years since the band’s first show, but the film makes it feel up to the minute. And for all the tragedies that have surrounded this band, starting with Curtis’ death, this is no mournful tribute, but a celebration

Director Grant Gee will introduce this film and participate in a Q&A after the screening.
