BBC season on racism, All White in Barking is presented here in a special award-winning feature length festival edition. Lifetime Barking residents Susan and Jeff have never said hello to their Nigerian neighbours, insisting that “they are not our people”. Dave is so incensed by the infl ux of non white faces to Barking he becomes a BNP activist. Meanwhile African Betty and holocaust survivor Monty form an unusually funny and affectionate relationship despite disapproving stares. Director Marc Issacs is unseen but still subverts many of the traditional observational rules of fi lmmaking, questioning prejudices and prying into preconceptions with remarkable results. The fi lm at times plays like a Mike Leigh comedy, particularly when Isaacs urges the reluctant neighbours to meet up.
