Billy is a 15 year-old outsider growing up in small-town Maine. In many ways he’s like other teenage boys - he likes heavy metal and martial arts and desperately wants a girlfriend but, mostly, Billy is seen as different.
‘I’m not black, I’m not white, not foreign ... just different in the mind, different brains, that’s all!’ says Billy, a champion outsider and a definite cult icon for a new generation of teens, students and anyone young at heart. A purist observational piece of direct cinema, this film is cinema at its rawest and most incisive. Billy is followed through his daily routines in and out of school - his hobbies, class-work, lonesome lunches and evenings at the local diner where he meets a girl. A meeting followed by days of naïve romance, excited passions, first kisses, liberating highs and, ultimately, life’s lessons told in the sweetest, truest and, finally, coolest performance Billy could ever air guitar to.
