October 5, 1974, in the Chilean suburbs of Santiago, pregnant Carmen is badly injured and her partner Miguel, head of the resistance against Pinochet’s dictatorship, is killed in combat.
From her life in exile Carmen Castillo returns to Chile and revisits her home and her family for the first time since her husband’s assassination. Calle Santa Fe is the story of her raw, uncompromising journey into the present, told without nostalgia or self-indulgence.
Miguel Enriquez her husband, was a revolutionary leader of the left-wing political movement, the MIR. Chile’s then president Salvador Allende, and popular government were ousted by a military coup and Pinochet’s new regime came to power. Carmen and Miguel’s house on Calle Santa Fe was raided in 1974, her husband was killed and she fled, pregnant with their child. Contemplating the present value of their experience, she considers the legacy of Pinochet’s regime. As the emotions of those chaotic years are revealed, the story of a generation of revolutionaries and a country torn apart emerges. Destined to be a seminal work on the history of Chile, this film enthrals with emotional and political urgency like few others before it.
