A gold mining company moves into a remote area of Guinea, West Africa. As the local tribe move from traditional to modern gold mining methods, they also move from being supporters of economic development to disgruntled agitators.
End of the Rainbow is a flawless piece of work. Not only is it a great example of observational filmmaking, it very simply informs us of complex economic and social forces influencing a globalised and wealthy western industry as it clashes with a poverty-stricken and traditional African culture.
We are with the elders of the local tribe before the mining company’s arrival; as they finally gain employment and expect great things of the future; as the government provides military back-up to protect the mine; and we are with them when the effects of open-cast mining and western economic power slowly begin to erode their land, their culture and their livelihoods.
Traditional West African music is used while End of the Rainbow offers contemplative and descriptive image sequences. With a keen eye for symbolic detail this story is powerfully witnessed and evocatively shot
