Rublyovka Road is being re-developed as the domestic playground for Russia’s new millionaires. Visiting politicians, desperate housewives, playboys, gangsters, eccentric fur coat designers and artists watch as Putin’s cavalcade rushes by, leaving the old Russia in its wake.
Rublyovka Road is the traffic artery connecting the powerhouse of Moscow with the Russian outback. The area has had a long history with the ruling elite, from Tsars to Presidents. The present-day wealth of Russia has, however, created an eccentric microcosm of unhindered capitalist excess. Gangsterism abounds as progress bulldozes its way towards an all too familiar future for us western viewers. The filmmakers were constantly harassed by Russian security firms, both private and public police forces, and much of the film had to be recorded secretly as poorer residents became victims of arson. Whilst Putin’s daily arrival heralds everything to a revered and ominous standstill. Wacky and disturbing, even without commentary, John Ronson and Louis Theroux fans out there should be pleased.
Dir. Irene Langemann – 2007 - Germany - 94 mins - Cert PG – Lichtfilm
52 PERCENT
Alla would love nothing more than to become a ballerina, so she auditions for the infamous Russian Vaganova Ballet Academy in St. Petersburg. 52% is the ideal ratio of legs to height for ballet dancers. But what do you do if your legs are 0.4% too short?
Dir. Rafal Skalski - 2007 - Poland - 20 mins - Cert PG - Krakow Film Foundation
