A Paris is Burning for lesbians, this documentary looks at women who prefer to dress and act as men and who participate in New York City’s predominantly African-American lesbian drag balls.
Six women defi ne themselves through their sensibilities and habits, and in so doing map out the many directions in which sexual orientation can take a person. Filmed over fi ve-years, The Aggressives keeps pace with the women at various stages, from fashion shoots to prison cells, with casual non-judgmental ease. What distinguishes an ‘aggressive’ is a question of attitude and self-description. Tiffany, whose masculine persona is that of a “faggot”. Shaven-headed Flo, is one of the few Asians in a largely black or Latino lifestyle. Kisha works as a part-time messenger in masculine attire. RJai is often recognised after her ‘lesbian stud’ appearance on The Ricki Lake Show. “My sexuality has nothing to with my gender,” she asserts. Young Octavia ‘misses the girls’ when she gets out of prison, whilst Marquise tones her muscles, carefully masking signals of her sex with baggy clothes, a close cropped hairstyle and bandages to fl atten her chest - because femininity is decidedly not her thing. A pacey and engaging fi lm during which any open-minded viewer will discover something about identity and about the certainty these women have found in learning to be their unusual, unfettered selves.
Followed by The Butch Is Back music night with DJ’s Ruth and Maria.
