No Surrender will be screened as part of this event, introduced by Bernard and will inform the class.
An exciting opportunity to learn about the work and influences of one of the UK’s greatest acting talents, Bernard Hill. Hill came to prominence in the role of the unemployed Yosser Hughes in Alan Bleasdale's Play for Today classic Boys from the Blackstuff (1979 & 1982). His impressive body of work includes film, television and theatre. Amongst the many film titles he has worked on are No Surrender (1985) which we will be screening as part of the masterclass, Drowning by Numbers (1988) Shirley Valentine (1989), A Midsummer Night's Dream (1999) Titanic (1997) in which he brilliantly portrayed the captain of the ill-fated ship. Bernard also gave the world an outstanding performance in the role of King Théoden of Rohan in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings Triology (2002 & 2003). His television work includes BBC2’s 1982 productions of Shakespeare’s Henry VI plays, The Burston Rebellion (1985) and A Very Social Secretary (2005). He has received two BAFTA nominations one for his portrayal of David Blunkett in A Very Social Secretary, (for which he was also nominated for an Emmy) and one for his portrayal of Yosser Hughes in Boys from the Blackstuff. In addition he has won a range of awards for his performance in Lord of the Rings:The Return of the King and The Two Towers.
In this master class Bernard will discuss his career as an actor, explore key moments in films he has appeared in and talk about film makers he admires and has worked with.
