Bruce La Bruce is incomparable within any history of film. His work is more transgressive than the doyenne of queer film indie-culture – Gus Van Sant. Counter-culture would be more definitive of La Bruce’s intentions. Resolutely committed to underground methods of filmmaking, his work relies on an astute study of a variety of film forms and styles while inverting the usual tropes of film storytelling. His films often feel like a surgical investigation, no more so than in his new film Otto: Or, Up With Dead People. His surgery though is less clinical… more a deep, down and dirty fascination with its material. La Bruce’s work is heartfelt and passionate enough to deliver a manifesto. He exposes situations, subjects and relationships that prove uncomfortable bedfellows for the average conservative of any sexual persuasion – marrying politics and sex quite often with popular culture conventions. He is of course one of the few true present-day avant-gardists in queer film culture and proudly reveals that culture for what he sees it to be today. This masterclass is a unique opportunity to discuss his filmography and gain insight into La Bruce’s influences.
