Waveriders is the realisation of a long term ambition by Joel Conroy of Inís Films to produce a documentary on the spectacular nature of surfing in Ireland. Having teamed up with Margo Harkin of Besom Productions the film came to fruition in 2008.
The film showcases the world class surfing destinations available off the North West coast which are now attracting the best international surfers to the island. In Conroy’s film skilled Irish surfers link up with world champion Kelly Slater, pioneering Irish American soul surfer Kevin Naughton and the renowned Californian based Malloy brothers in order to ride some of the most exciting surf ever seen in Ireland. The story climaxes with a big wave finale using the newly developed technique of tow surfing as the protagonists ride monster waves off the coast of Mullaghmore on 1 December 2007.
In this Masterclass Joel and Margo will give insights into the making of this incredible film from the original idea, to their collaboration, filming and completion of the final edit.
