Her Name is Sabine tells the story through personal footage filmed by her sister the French actress Sandrine Bonnaire over a period of 25 years.
This documentary unfolds for us an endearing personality, whose growth and many talents were crushed by an inadequate care structure. After a tragic five-year stay in a psychiatric hospital, Sabine found a new lease on life - even if her capacities remain altered - in a home in the Charente region. The film exposes the penury of specialised institutions and the dramatic consequences they can lead to. The pure joy, love and mutual adoration between these two sisters washes over you and carries you along through this touching, uplifting and delightful masterpiece of a documentary.
“...the most beautiful film that Cannes has given us this year...it is the most true to life in human terms...its focus on the individual never reduces its collective aspect, from the level of the family, spreading out to the level of society. Finally, because it’s cinema at its purest.”
