Amid the infamous dam construction along the ‘three gorges’ of the Yangtze river, a cruise ship brings tourists along the river. Meanwhile two young Chinese employees begin an entirely different journey of their own.

Yu Shui says goodbye to her family who live on the banks of the Yangtze. She must leave for a new future working on the river as it rises, instead of farming on the riverside land as it drowns. Her journey is compared to that of the middle class city kid Chen Bo Yu, an over-confident product of China’s ‘Little Emperor’ one-child-only policy, who begins working on the cruise ship in higher status. This is a magnificent tale spread across iconic vistas as forces shaping a new Chinese economic powerhouse turn to explicit effect on the everyday lives of its young and maturing workforce.

“A gloriously cinematic doc of epic, poetic sadness. ‘Yangtze’ should be a hit ... thanks to its embrace of irony rather than righteous indignation ... the qualities of the production are like the Three Gorges itself, oceanic!”
